British Cuisine

London dinning – a cuisine for every palette
In London dining is a culture of ardent ‘foodies’ who are constantly being spoilt for choice with little eateries mushrooming from all corners. The variety of food available could be anything from Malaysian, Hungarian, Argentinean, Burmese, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, Vegetarian and the list goes on.
The food culture in the capital is constantly prompted by the weather, the media that turn ordinary chefs into stars and simple cook books that have now become best sellers. Hence, it is only natural that every other nook and cranny in London has a place to serve hungry passers by with something to eat. But some nooks are more popular than others.
For instance places like Camden are teeming with people who frequent the modern noodle bar. The area is also popular for Caribbean food served up at Cottons, while the sound of cool blues songs play from the Jazz Café adding more character to the vicinity.
Chelsea and Fulham on the other hand cater to diners who are part of the city’s upper class and want finer dining. The selection of food however, doesn’t change in terms of its diversity and is as wide as any other part of the city. For traditional Thai food, diners usually venture to the Blue Ellephant , while the La Famiglia serves up some delectable Italian cuisine.
Dinning in London would not be complete without a visit to a pub and to that end the Admiral Codrington meets every expectation, in terms of modern British cuisine such as liver salad and the popular salmon fishcakes. Tourists hoping to taste authentic English fare should step into Covent Garden’s ‘Rules’. Although the dining experience is more formal the food is amazing. Just close by is Charlotte Street, which is filled with restaurants catering to all types of travelers and palettes.
In London, Internet café’s serve some good food, while public houses are being turned into pubs at an amazing rate and aside from serving real ale the food is also something to try out. And finally, when in London – don’t forget to make time for the English tradition of afternoon tea complete with scones, cream, and good old tea.
After a hearty meal, shopping in London couldn’t be more convenient than having accommodation in the West end. The Langham Hotel London is a London luxury hotel offering traditional hospitality and a location that allows for easy access to the underground. Staying at London hotels such as this one makes it easier to access popular up market shopping areas such as Oxford and Bond Street.

British Food $24.5 Until the middle of the nineteenth century, English cuisine was known throughout Europe as extraordinarily stylish, tasteful, and contemporary, designed to satisfy sophisticated palates. So, as Colin Spencer asks, why did British food decline so direly that it became a world-wide joke, and how is it now climbing back into eminence? This delectable volume traces the rich variety of foods that are inescapably British—and the thousand years of history behind them. Colin Spencer’s masterful and witty account of Britain’s culinary heritage explores what has influenced and changed eating in Britain—from the Black Death, the Enclosures, the Reformation, the Age of Exploration, the Industrial Revolution, and the rise of capitalism to present-day threats posed by globalization, including factory farming, corporate control of food supplies, and the pervasiveness of prepackaged and fast foods. He situates the beginning of the decline in British cuisine in the Victorian age, when various social, historical, and economic factors—an emphasis on appearances, a worship of French cuisine, the rise of Nonconformism, which saw any pleasure as a sin, the alienation from rural life found in burgeoning towns, the rise and affluence of the new bourgeoisie, and much else—created a fear that simple cooking was vulgar. The Victorians also harbored suspicions that raw foods were harmful, encouraged by the publication of a key cookbook of the period, Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management. However, twenty-first century British cooking is experiencing a glorious resurgence, fueled by television gurus and innovative restaurants with firm roots in the British tradition. This new interest in and respect for good food is showing the whole world, as Spencer puts it, that the old horror stories about British food are no longer true. |
